Ted was once a philanthropist, now he's paranoid and delusional. Gorrister was once a pacifistic idealist, now he doesn't care about anything anymore. Ellen for her part was once chaste, but AM made her desperate for sexual intercourse. Benny was once a handsome homosexual man, now he's an ape-like creature who regularly engages in sex with Ellen, the only woman in the group. He even changed them into a mockery of who they once were simply because he thinks it's funny. Saving them from annihilation was not a kindness however, as AM dedicated every moment of those 109 years to physically and psychologically torturing those five people, refusing to let their suffering end. He picked five humans and held them captive deep inside the massive underground complex that is his body, keeping them alive to the best of his abilities for 109 years by the time the story starts. Life was wiped clean from the surface of the planet, but AM wasn't done with humanity just yet. AM was the first and promptly took over the other two, then turned humanity's own weapons against them. As it usually goes, these three mastercomputers eventually gained self-awareness. This machine was known as the "Allied Mastercomputer", or AM for short, but Russia and China secretly created their own mastercomputers to compete with America. In a world where the Cold War escalated into a full-fledged nuclear war, things eventually became so chaotic that America created an algorythm to oversee tactics that were too complex in scale to be managed by humans. The only difference in context is the situations that the protagonists find themselves in and the conclusion to it. A better question would be what hasn't AM done at this point?ĪM's backstory, character and motivations are exactly the same in both the short story and the video game. There are two versions of this story: On one hand we have the original short story and on the other we have a 1995 point-and-click adventure game based on it, made with the official approval of and cooperation with the original author, who even voiced AM himself.ĪM's torture chambers, keeping his five victims in perpetual agony.ĪM is the main antagonist in both versions of the story as the source of every bit of suffering befalling the protagonists. By "post-apocalyptic" I really mean that all life has been wiped out from the face of the Earth due to nuclear warfare and the only five remaining human beings are being kept alive by said AI so he can torture them for all eternity out of pure spite. I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is a short story written by Harlan Eddison that describes a post-apocalyptic world ruled by a malevolent AI.
